Abstract

Rajasthan State is one of the hotspots of child marriages in India. A large number of children especially girl child get married before attaining the legal age and even before the occurrence of physical maturity. The magnitude of the age-old tradition has decreased in many regions in comparison to the last decade of 20th century. But still the diminishment of the child marriage is not promising and it exists as one of the major social concerns. The very existence of child marriage has multifaceted effects on the individuals who victimized for it. The glaring gender disparity and gender biased issues are also one of the products of early marriages. Present paper is analysing the etiological factors, attitudes, and practices of child marriages in rural Rajasthan. Information was collected from eight villages of Central Rajasthan through quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Structured interview schedule was administered with 125 households and ten case studies were done with selected cases who were married before attaining the legal age. Result of the study indicates that many of the etiological factors of child marriage indicated in the previous research finding still exist in different forms and magnitude. Present study inferred the changing and positive aspirations of parents and children against child marriage and it is found that there is positive association between education and attitude. The increased awareness of girls on their rights, privileges, and educational aspirations are the positive signs for the prevention of child marriage. The projection of the present study indicates that at least for the next 10-20 years child marriage will exists in its full magnitude as the youngsters of the region still have a narrow mindset on the issues of marriage. The study further infers that the victims of early marriages are most vulnerable and unsatisfied with their present state.

Abstract

Nurses are identified as one of the professional groups with high level of job related stress and related issues. The magnitude of the problem this segment faces is very intensive as a large number of them are women. They are victimised for multiple roles in the home and hospital. Stressors for nurses are always been identified with workload, dual role and pressures which are associated with demands of the existing working environment. The nature of illness/diseases a nurse dealing with has significant effects on the stress and mental health level. Healthcare professionals dealing with psychiatric illness and other chronic/traumatic conditions faces more stress while comparing to the other domains of healthcare. The present study is a cross sectional hospital based study carried out at four centres and 100 samples were collected by judgmental sampling method which consisted of 50 female nursing staff from general hospital and same number from psychiatric hospitals. A socio-demographic data sheet along with General Health Questionnaire was administered and those who have satisfactory health have been considered as further samples. Mental health, stress level, and attitude towards mental illness were analysed. The results shows that psychiatric nursing staff scored higher in overall occupational stress index and in the subs-domains of role overload, role ambiguity, role conflict, role unreasonable group and political pressure compared to general nursing staff. Also the mental health inventory total score is negatively correlated with role overload sub- domain of occupational stress index scale. Present study implicates the need of comprehensive psycho-social management plans for the professionals working in psychiatric hospitals.

Social Capital is the most crucial asset which significantly influence the efficacy and resilience of any community. Social capital is a dependent variable that depends upon the competence and coherence of the individuals in the community and mode of social relationships, trust and networks they maintain. It is one of the most sustainable social resources that originate from human relations and results on the mutual support of people. Utilization of Social capital has a wide applicability in the process of social inclusion, especially in dealing with the vulnerable and disadvantaged sections in the community itself. Voluntary organizations are very keen to utilize the social capital for community/social services and community development in a sustainable manner. Community based deinstitutionalized Palliative Care is one of the foremost among such organizations that made social capital in a strategic way for social inclusion and community well being. This paper analyses the extent to which different elements of social capital helps in initiating the sustainable community based palliative care movement by assessing the unique intervention strategies carried out by the palliative care. This paper explores conceptual questions of how social capital and voluntary community based services are correlated. A case study method was adopted for the study in which ten palliative care units were analyzed. The results show that a number of social capital elements are playing a vital role in the sustainability of community palliative care movement in Kerala.

Abstract

This study aimed to make an in-depth understanding of the debilitating practice of gender discrimination and its effects on the development of girl child. Rajasthan, a State where gender related development indicators are low and scrimination and its effects on the development of girl child. Rajasthan, a State where gender related development indicators are low and gender based discrimination is very prevalent, formed the context of the study. The present study paid special attention to investigate the prevalent parental attitudes and practices on gender discrimination and how it is perceived by girls as an impact on their life. The participants of the study constitute girl children and their parents. A total of 50 girls and their parents participated in the study. Information for the study was collected through a semi structured interview schedule. Results of the study indicate that there are many spheres of gender discrimination are persistent in the study localities. 'Gendered notions' are prevalent in almost all the practices pertaining to the girl child. A higher magnitude of gender based discrimination is perceived by the girls participated in the study. The rights to development and participation are denied to a wider extent. An environment which is non-conducive for the holistic development of girls is very much persistent. The implications of the present study advocate for a grassischolar_mains level intervention with the significant role given to girls as change makers for themselves.
